António Henrique Rodrigo de Oliveira Marques was born in São Pedro do Estoril, Cascais, on 23 August 1933.
He graduated in Historical-Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon and did an internship at the University of Wüzburg, Germany. In 1957 he began teaching at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where, in 1960, he obtained a PhD in History.
He left for the USA in 1965 and taught at several universities, returning to Portugal in 1970.
From 1974 to 1976, he served as director of the National Library of Lisbon.
He was considered one of the great specialists in the history of the Portuguese Middle Ages.
The historian and professor António Oliveira Marques made a valuable contribution to the History of Insurance. From his vast historiographic initiative there is an excellent work of reference: “Para a História dos Seguros em Portugal: notas e documentos” (For the History of Insurance in Portugal: notes and documents) (Arcádia, 1977).
António Henrique Rodrigo de Oliveira Marques died in Lisbon on 23 January 2007.
