António José de Almeida was born in Vale da Vinha, municipality of Penacova, on 17th june 1866. Graduated from the University of Coimbra, he practiced medicine in Angola and São Tomé e Príncipe from 1895 to 1904. In 1905, he did internships in several french clinics, after which he set up a practice in Lisbon.

He was part of the 1st group of shareholders of the Companhia de Seguros Comércio e Indústria, founded in 1907, whose first headquarters was installed at Rua do Ouro 75 – 2º in the space previously occupied by the clinic of Dr. António José de Almeida, who, in the meantime, had abandoned clinical practice to dedicate himself exclusively to politics.

A republic supporter since 1905, after the establishment of the Republic he occupied the posts of Deputy and Minister. He was a very eloquent and inflammatory speaker, who excited the hearings of the Republican meetings.

He was the 6th President of the 1st Republic, from 5th october 1919 to 1923, and was the only one in this troubled period of our history to fully complete his mandate. Has sworn sixteen governments, which shows the political instability at that time.
