President
José Antonio de Arez Romão, born in 1944, graduated in Law at Lisbon Law School in 1967 and had his first contact with insurance in 1969 at the general agency of Guardian Assurance, Co. in Portugal.
Between 1970 and 1978 he was Director and Administrator of the Industrial Insurance Company of Fonsecas & Burnay Group.
He actively participated in the nationalisation and reprivatisation processes of the Insurance Companies in the second half of the 20th century, particularly in the Mundial-Confiança Company.
After the period of nationalisation of the insurance industry, resulting from the 1974 Revolution, more specifically in 1978, he was appointed Director of Mundial-Confiança Insurance Company, a position he held until 1986.
Chairman of the Technical Committee on Civil Liability of the Portuguese Association of Insurers (1984/1986).
He was one of the founders of Lusitania Insurance Company, in 1986, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors remained there until 2012, in what he considered to be the great project of his life.
He was involved in the resolution of a great sinister, such as the Chiado Fire, in 1988.
As a Member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Insurance Association he was in two different periods, from 1989 to 1991 and from 2003 to 2008.
Between 1999 and 2007 he was Director of IMPAR, the Company Cabo Verdiana of Insurance.
Between 2008 and 2012 he held the position of Chairman of the General Meeting of the Portuguese Insurance Association.
It considers that insurance is not only an element of balance in societies and dynamism in economies but is also the main means of protecting people and goods.
It highlights the importance of insurance in future problems arising from climate change.
It has published dozens of works in the field of divulging Portuguese History and Culture.
In 2006, the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic was deservedly honoured by Ruy de Carvalho with the Grã-Cruz – Ordem do Mérito Agrícola, Comercial e Industrial (Order of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Merit), by charter of 7 March 2006, published in DR no. 96 of 18 May 2006 (II series).
